What if our walking speed says a lot about our personality ? In any case, this is what seems to suggest a study conducted by the British psychologist Richard Wiseman. According to the latter, people who walk quickly are just as likely to be more stressed and unhappy than people who walk slowly. According to experts, walking too quickly could even have negative effects on our health and more specifically on our heart condition.
Are people who walk quickly less happy ?
As reported by the Daily Mail, in order to reach this conclusion, Professor Richard Wiseman, in collaboration with researchers from the British Council, the University of Hertfordshire, conducted an experiment with 70 pedestrians in 34 cities around the world. Men and women were secretly timed between two fixed points as they walked along a downtown sidewalk. Note that all the people followed walked alone, did not use their cell phones and were not weighed down by heavy bags. This is how the scientists were able to see, in comparison with previous studies, that our walking pace had increased by a tenth and that as soon as people began to accelerate, they also showed other signs of stress and nervousness, especially when they found themselves "stuck" behind slower people.
If we had to establish a ranking of the countries in which people walk the fastest, it would be the inhabitants of Singapore who would take the first position, since according to the results of the survey, they only put 10.55 seconds to travel 18 meters. Next come the Danes and the Spaniards with 10.82 seconds and 10.89 seconds respectively. "People tend to walk slower in countries where the pace of life is slower," says Professor Richard Wiseman.
The average walking speed for most healthy adults is around 3 miles per hour or 4.8 kilometers per hour. However, walking speed can vary based on several factors, including age, sex, size, and overall fitness level. In general, males tend to have faster overall walking speed than females. Brisk walking is considered to be 100 steps per minute or 3 to 3.5 miles per hour. Walking speed decreases with age. A person's walking speed can also be affected by carrying a heavy pack or some other type of load or wearing a weighted vest to increase the intensity of workouts.
