If you plan to go to the mountains, for example, comes the question of the resistance of the cat to altitude. So, at what altitude can you take your feline companion ?
In reality, the altitude does not present any particular danger for cats, unless they have health problems, particularly respiratory problems. In short, just like humans ! Up to 2000 meters above sea level, like us and apart from any pathology, a cat supports altitude very well. Beyond that, everything will depend on his age, his state of health, even his race. Certain breeds of cats are indeed genetically predisposed to increased resistance to altitude. It may be relevant, if the place is at a high altitude (over 2000 meters), to make an appointment with the veterinarian to ensure that the feline does not suffer from any respiratory ailments.
Prepare the cat well to change altitude.. but above territory !
If you plan to take your cat on a stay at altitude, it is essential to take a few precautions... especially to minimize its stress, if any respiratory pathology has indeed been ruled out. The cat is above all a territorial animal, even if the attachment to the master is, according to the cats, even more important than the place where it is moved. It is therefore advisable not to let the cat go outside, mainly because of weather conditions and snow, if any, which may be unusual for him. Ski slopes should also be avoided, as it might be tempting to explore them. You must create a safe and comfortable environment inside the accommodation at altitude so that your cat can enjoy the stay in complete serenity, and avoid going out without a leash or harness.
Unusual story of cats and altitude..
Researchers recently made an amazing discovery in Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal : at an altitude of over 5000 meters, they detected the presence of two cats. These felines are not domestic cats or abandoned animals, but rather representatives of a wild species called Pallas' cat, also known as Manul. These animals are descendants of the leopard and share certain physical traits with it, such as characteristic spots and long hair. Although the presence of these two cats was officially confirmed recently, scientists have been on their trail for several years. They have already published some of their findings in the journal Science last September. Proof that cats and altitude go hand in hand !
Can you bring your cat everywhere ?
Cats are known to be humdrum, homebody. But, introducing them to new horizons would probably be an experience they would enjoy. Especially when we know that traveling without them causes us stress and stresses them too. So, yes you can bring your cat anywhere provided that this place does not present any danger for your tomcat. However, as we mentioned at the beginning of the point, cats are homebodies. So if you usually leave without him, please just leave him at home or with a pet-sitter.
