After losing his penis following a serious infection of the perineum, a 45-year-old man had a new genital organ grafted onto his arm, then reintroduced in its original place. Years of ordeal that he recounts in the British media.
The story of this man is unthinkable, and yet very real. Malcolm McDonald, a 48-year-old Briton, lived for four years with a penis transplanted to his left arm after losing his to a horrific blood infection, The Sun newspaper reported in 2022. At the time, the native of Norfolk (England) says he felt devastated, although his testicles remained intact. Malcolm's medical journey was also the subject of a documentary entitled "The man with a penis on his arm", broadcast on Channel 4 in May 2022.
Suffering from a serious infection, his penis "falls to the ground"
After years of suffering caused by an infection of the perineum which turned into sepsis, making his fingers, his toes and finally his penis completely black, the latter "falls to the ground" in 2014, recalls Malcolm McDonald. His doctor then recommended that he turn to Professor David Ralph, an expert in phallus construction at University College Hospital in London, who suggested that he proceed with a unique reconstruction called phalloplasty : a penis graft implanted on his left arm then transplanted to his crotch.
But the Covid-19 pandemic has delayed his operation, and Malcolm's penis, funded by the British health system, called NHS, to the tune of 50,000 £, had to remain attached to his arm for six long years. "Can you imagine six years of your life with a penis swinging on your arm?" he questions in the Channel 4 documentary. "The worst thing is when you hug your grandma at Christmas and it jumps out at him," adds Malcolm.
A major surgery
Malcolm's ordeal ends in 2022, after nine hours of operation. "The first thing I did was look down and I was like, 'Oh my God ! They made it this time. I feel like a real man again," said the Briton. Made from the flesh of Malcolm's arm, he gradually regains his senses. As The Sun explains, the doctors put a pump in his scrotum to fill it with saline solution, in order to prepare him to regain a sexual life. Happy to have regained his manhood, Malcolm is now ready to find love again. "I'm ready to go on dates again. It's been 14 years since I last did. It's way too long for a man," he explained in a new interview in May. 2022, and signed up on Tinder.
