What if a simple food could transform your mood ? At least.. contribute to being happier. According to a recent study, a food that we all know would be rich in essential nutrients that would promote our overall well-being.
According to the study by Professor Peter Pribis, from the University of Mexico, walnuts are allies for our body and our mood. The study states that consuming nuts can “lead to a mood improvement of around 28 percent.” here is how.
The benefits of walnuts : a superfood
To obtain this observation, the researchers asked a panel of participants to eat nuts for eight weeks. Half of the participants consumed walnuts, “previously crushed and mixed in banana bread in order to make them indistinguishable in terms of taste or appearance”.
The other participants tasted banana bread without nuts. To complete the test, participants completed a questionnaire to assess their mood. The professor explained : “We used a validated questionnaire called Mood State Profiles. The test has six mood domains : tension, depression, anger, fatigue, vigor, confusion, and also provides an overall mood disturbance score (PDH). The lower the PDH score, the better the mood”.
And the result is clear : “There was a significant 28% improvement in mood among young men. However, we did not observe an improvement in mood in women. We don't know why,” said the professor.
Other studies have reportedly demonstrated positive effects on women's moods after consuming walnuts as well.
Why are walnuts so good for your health and mood ?
But then, why are nuts so favorable to our development ? This is due to their composition. Walnuts are rich in mood-boosting nutrients, such as alpha-linolenic acid, vitamin E, folic acid, polyphenols and melatonin. So many elements that promote the best mood.
According to the professor who conducted the study, there is no doubt that it is important to increase your consumption of walnuts : “Increase your consumption of walnuts, because it is a simple intervention that brings many benefits. Not only do they improve mood, but they also promote better overall well-being. The recommended amount is one handful per day”.
