Twenty fraudulent applications have just been pinned in the latest report from TrendMicro. Present on Android, they harbor two pieces of malware.

Android smartphones are regularly targeted by cybercriminals. Whether through the Google Play Store or, more often still, through third-party stores. In a new report, cybersecurity experts from TrendMicro warn of the presence of two new malware.

The two viruses, named CherryBlos and FakeTrade, hold the positions of thief and scammer respectively. In all, the researchers estimate that the hacker responsible camouflaged this malware in more than twenty applications. 26, to be exact.

Cryptocurrencies and advertisements

CherryBlos is the least common virus. Fortunately for cryptocurrency owners. According to information collected by TrendMicro, this virus “can steal cryptocurrency wallet credentials and replace victims’ addresses while they make withdrawals”. In other words, all cryptoassets are returned to the hacker's account.

It was in April 2023 that CherryBlos began to be talked about. TrendMicro's cybersecurity teams traced him to a Telegram group called Ukraine ROBOT. Which redirects to phishing website which push users to install the rogue apps. Below is the list of applications hosting the virus :

  • GPTalk
  • HappyMiner
  • robot 999
  • SynthNet

Alongside this cryptocurrency thief, TrendMicro pinpoints another virus, FakeTrade. Less aggressive than its counterpart, the malware is no less harmful. Indeed, the infected applications are indulging in scams. Users download any of them hoping to make some profit but never reap their earnings. As a reward, ads that never end and whose revenue lands directly in the pocket of cybercriminals.

Note that hackers managed to deceive the vigilance of Google's Play Store to spread their infected applications there. However, Google has been warned and the giant's teams have already cleaned up. If ever one of these applications is on your phone, it is up to you to delete it. Below is the list in question :

  • WADA
  • BB Shop
  • Canyon
  • home
  • Send
  • Fair
  • FIRETOSS
  • gobuy
  • GoDo
  • goshop

  • Koofire
  • Leefire
  • moshop
  • NtBuy
  • Onefire
  • papaya
