A new laser machine is about to revolutionize the repair of smartphone screens. This tool is indeed able to correct the damage of an OLED panel without having to disassemble the whole phone.
Over time, white, yellowish or greenish lines may appear on the OLED screen of your smartphone. This phenomenon can occur following a violent shock, excessive pressure on the slab or even the progressive wear of the light-emitting diodes. In most cases, it is necessary to replace the OLED screen to correct the problem. If the device is already several years old, users will be more tempted to invest in a new smartphone rather than pay for an expensive repair.
New technology could be a game-changer and extend the life of our precious phones. On his YouTube channel, the videographer Spare Parts has indeed presented a new machine equipped with a laser. This allows the failure of the panel to be repaired without having to completely dismantle the terminal.
How can a laser repair an OLED screen ?
First, the technicians analyze the OLED screen to identify the presence of damage in the structure of the slab. For the moment, they must manually take care of the search for traces. Eventually, this phase should be able to be automated. In the video, the technicians interviewed also specify that this is the first generation of the tool, and that improvements will quickly see the light of day.
Once that's done, they'll use a laser to fix the damage, trace by trace, until the unsightly line disappears. This is the same laser used by manufacturers to cut OLED panels during design. This laser can penetrate through the first layer of the display substrate, which can remain on during the entire operation. The technician can thus check in real time when the display problem has been resolved.
The limits of the laser
Note that the machine has limitations. It cannot repair screens that are completely destroyed and show scratches and cracks. The laser can only work on the OLED panel. The protective layer of glass, such as Corning's famous Gorilla Glass, cannot be repaired using the machine. This must also be removed before the installation corrects the laser marks. If you throw your phone out the window, it is likely that the laser can't do anything for you. Likewise, if the problem is caused by a defective cable or component under the screen, the machine will be useless. You will have to go through a disassembly.
This new machine has just appeared on the market, specifies the YouTuber. A single installation of this kind costs around 12,000 dollars. With a tool of this ilk, phone repair experts aim to be able to correct all the problems inherent in OLED technology, which is widely used in the mobile phone industry. In particular, there are OLED panels on Apple iPhones.
