If this is not enough, it is necessary to switch to antidiabetic treatments, including taking insulin. As this hormone is no longer produced in sufficient quantity by the pancreas, it must be administered in the form of injections in order to help the patient regulate his blood sugar correctly.

The adipose tissue trail

Initial work had enabled French, British, American and Australian researchers to identify a link between insulin resistance, which often precedes the onset of type 2 diabetes (liver, muscle and adipose tissue cells are less sensitive to insulin) and some adipose tissue abnormalities.


The scientists continued on this path and managed to develop a drug that “specifically targets adipocytes by restoring glucose uptake there and thus restoring the metabolic physiology of adipose tissue”.


In other words, by targeting adipocytes, the researchers succeeded in treating insulin resistance, “with beneficial effects on the whole organism”.


Called PATAS, the drug has been successfully tested in diabetic mice, paving the way for an upcoming clinical trial in humans.
